Bike and Build

I'm participating in a program called Bike and Build.

Pedaling for Affordable Housing
Bike & Build is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization that runs 8 cross-country cycling trips for young adults each summer. During the trips participants stop in cities along the way and build affordable houses (AH) with local affordable housing groups, and raise awareness about AH and bicycle safety as they go. Their events act as a catalyst to build homes, foster a spirit of service, and empower young adults.
To see more detailed information about Bike & Build such as rider profiles, route descriptions, and grant applications, go to the website http://bikeandbuild.org

The Requirement*
In order to participate in Bike & Build, each rider must do 3 things:
  1. Fundraise $4,000
  2. Ride 500 miles
  3. Volunteer for 10 hours of "sweat equity" with a local AH organization
*Note: these are all minimum requirements for the trip. Many riders exceed 1 or more of the expectations.

 Trip Proceeds
Proceeds from Bike and Build events are distributed in 4 ways:
  1. En-Route Donations: to the communities and housing groups we visit
  2. Competitive Grants: riders receive grant applications and award funding through a team-based competitive selection process
  3. Individual Rider Grants: each rider donates a portion of their fundraising to one AH organization
  4. Pre-Arranged Donations: Bike & Build funds projects executed by the groups we work with to produce our events
